Beginning Monday, Nov. 1, Fairfax City is activating its new speed camera installed near school zones. On March 9, 2021, Fairfax City Council adopted an ordinance amending Chapter 98, Article 1, of the Code of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, to add a new section 98-22 (Use of photo speed monitoring devices in highway work zones and school crossing zones; penalty)
The city police department may install and operate photo speed monitoring devices, within the municipal boundaries of the city, in school crossing zones for the purposes of recording violations of Code of Virginia, § 46.2-873 and in highway work zones for the purposes of recording violations of Code of Virginia, § 46.2-878.1.

Fines
- Over 12-15 mph: $50
- Over 16-19 mph: $75
- Over 20 mph and up: $100
For the first 30 days, drivers who are photographed will receive only a warning citation.
