Fairfax City, VA – Fairfax City shoppers will be required to pay a 5-cent tax on disposable plastic bags provided at point of sale starting January 1, 2023.

Excluded from the plastic tax are:

intended for reuse
used to wrap food items
dry cleaning or prescription bags
plastic bags sold in packages for garbage or pet waste

The plastic bag tax was implemented to reduce the amount of plastic waste ending up in landfills or littering our waterways, roadways, and open spaces in the City of Fairfax.

The tax is administered by the Virginia Department of Taxation (804-367-8031)
